Clark County sheriff’s deputies arrested a man Tuesday for allegedly killing a man with a bow and arrow, officials said.

Richard Vanderhoek, of Vancouver, faces a likely charge of murder in the second degree, according to jail records.

Sheriff’s deputies responded at about 6:44 a.m. Tuesday to a house near the 3200 block of Northeast Petticoat Lane in Vancouver after a man told a 911 dispatcher he had “shot another man with a bow and arrow after an altercation,” according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

The deputies found a man dead in the driveway of a home with an arrow in his chest, according to the sheriff’s office. Vanderhoek allegedly told deputies the first name of the victim and described him as an acquaintance.

Officials have not released the name of the victim.

According to sheriff’s officials, at around 6:05 a.m. a witness saw Vanderhoek and the victim fighting in front of the house where the victim was later found dead. The witness said one of the men walked away and the other followed him in a car, sheriff’s officials said in a statement.

Both men soon returned to the driveway of the house, “where a second altercation ensued,” ending with the victim being shot by the bow and arrow, according to sheriff’s officials.

Deputies took Vanderhoek to an area hospital for minor injuries, the sheriff’s office said.

Court records show that a 46-year-old man named Richard Cole Vanderhoek of Vancouver, has past convictions for possession of a stolen vehicle, methamphetamine possession with intention to distribute and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Vanderhoek is being held in jail and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
