Former head of Portland police union returns to city as chief’s top aide

Robert King, pictured, spent eight of his 27 years on the police force as head of the Portland Police Association in the early 2000s and retired abruptly from the Police Bureau as North Precinct commander in late 2017.

A former president of Portland’s rank-and-file police union has returned to the city with a new law enforcement job.

Robert King, the former union boss and a retired police commander who also spent two years as Mayor Ted Wheeler’s senior public safety adviser, became chief of staff to Portland Chief Bob Day on Feb. 1, according to the Police Bureau.
