Readers respond: Special ed school integration long delayed

Letters to the editor

After years of raising my son in the special education system with Portland Public Schools, I was very happy and encouraged to read that PPS is moving special ed students into mainstream classrooms, (“Portland wants to place high-need special education students in their neighborhood schools. Can the district make it work?” March 17).

Future special ed students deserve to be included with their peers. Parents and others struggled with this for years, never seeing much change until our children aged out of the system. The simple question “Why not?” was answered with “Not possible.”
