Rewinding Oregon State’s loss to South Carolina in Elite Eight: Live updates recap

ALBANY, N.Y. — Oregon State could not pull off the biggest upset of the women’s college basketball season, falling to unbeaten South Carolina 70-58 on Sunday in the women’s NCAA Tournament Albany 1 Regional final.

The Beavers’ run through March Madness and their season comes to an end as the Gamecocks (36-0) head back to the Final Four once again.

The Beavers (27-8) were 1-1 in previous Elite Eight games, winning in 2016 over Baylor to earn a Final Four berth, while losing to Louisville in 2018. OSU is now 1-3 all-time against South Carolina, with all three losses coming in NCAA Tournament games.

Here’s a recap of how Oregon State vs. South Carolina unfolded:

FINAL: South Carolina 70, Oregon State 58

-- Hansford’s three rattles in and out. S.C. grabs the rebound, and the Beavers foul with 25.4 left. Tessa Johnson heads to the line. She makes both. It’s 70-58. Shuler’s layup misses. And South Carolina runs out the rest of the clock. The Gamecocks win it 70-58 and head back to the Final Four. The Beavers’ season ends.

-- It is Oregon State’s ball with 48.2 left. They trail 65-58. But von Oelhoffen turns it over by moving her feet on the baseline. The Beavers have to foul. Hunter fouls Johnson. OSU with one more foul before the Beavers are in the bonus. Beers, Gardiner and Hunter check out. Hansford fouls Tessa Johnson. She makes both free throws. S.C. leads 67-58. Hansford misses a three. The Gamecocks rebound it. Another OSU foul stops the clock at 32.3. Hall shoots free throws. She makes the first. She misses the second, and timeout Beavers with 31.3 to go.

-- South Carolina with the ball out of the timeout. Tessa Johnson with the runner in the lane, and she is fouled. The free throw is good, so S.C. extends its lead to 65-58. Gardiner misses. A Beers block. Von Oelhoffen sets up. She feeds Hansford, whose three is off. Beers contests Cardoso’s shot nicely. Other end, Gardiner has it blocked. She gets it backed, but then a jump ball gives it to South Carolina. The Gamecocks run clock. An airball on a three, and it goes out of bounds. The Beavers get it back with 1:25 to play. Von Oelhoffen’s corner three is off. S.C. with the board. Now 1 minute left, and still 65-58. A miss, and the Beavers get the ball back with 48.2 seconds to go. It’s under review to determine possession.

-- After a South Carolina miss, the Beavers track down the rebound. Hunter drives and scores a layup, cutting the S.C. lead to 62-58. S.C. calls a timeout with 3:37 left. Oregon State has outscored South Carolina 12-4 in the fourth quarter.

-- OSU with the ball after a South Carolina foul. Hansford drains a three. That cuts the lead to 58-51. Halls drives and scores for S.C. Now Gardiner answers with a three, and the Gamecocks’ lead is 60-54. Beers picks up her fourth foul. Cardoso to the line, and she misses the first. She hits the second, but a lane violation on South Carolina wipes out the point. So still 60-54. The Beavers turn it over as Beers steps on the baseline. Cardoso’s layup attempt won’t go, but Paopao hits a runner after two S.C. offensive boards. The Gamecocks lead it 62-54 with under 5 minutes to go. Hunter hits a jumper. So 62-56.

-- The Beavers start the fourth quarter with the ball. Gardiner misses a three. Watkins airballs a three for South Carolina. Hunter’s shot blocked. On the other end, the Gamecocks miss. OSU back with it. Beers misses a jumper. The Beavers get an offensive board, but another miss. An S.C. miss and a Beers rebound. It leads to a Beers layup on the other end. S.C. leads 58-48 with 7:40 to play.

END THIRD QUARTER: South Carolina 58, Oregon State 46

-- Gardiner with a jumper, cutting it to 55-43. Watkins answers for South Carolina with a layup. Feagin whistled for a foul on Beers. And Beers misses the first free throw but makes the second. S.C. up 57-44. A South Carolina miss, and Gardiner draws a foul on the fast break. She converts both free throws, trimming the S.C. lead to 57-46. Closing seconds of the quarter, and Fulwiley draws a foul on Hunter. Fulwiley hits 1 of 2, and the quarter ends. South Carolina leads 58-46 heading to the fourth.

-- Tessa Johnson hits a three for South Carolina. That extends the S.C. lead to 49-41. Gardiner misses a three for OSU. A driving layup for Tessa Johnson. An OSU turnover leads to another layup. The Gamecocks go up 53-41. Paurova’s shot won’t go. South Carolina back with it. Beers with a blocked shot. Feagin with a layup, and the Gamecocks are up 55-41. The Beavers take a timeout with 1:34 left in the third quarter. It’s a 12-0 run for South Carolina.

-- Rees checks in for Beers. And Paurova is in for Marotte. Johnson hits a three for the Gamecocks. South Carolina leads 46-41. Von Oelhoffen with a missed layup, a steal and another missed layup. Rees with a block. And a timeout on the floor with 3:44 to go in the third quarter.

-- Gardiner’s corner three is short. Hall misses one for South Carolina. Then a Gamecocks steal and Cardoso layup. S.C. up 43-39. Beers scores for OSU, and it’s 43-41. Under 6 minutes to go in the quarter. Cardoso picks up her third foul.

-- Cardoso scores a layup to make the South Carolina lead 39-33. On the other end, Beers draws a foul. She hits both free throws to cut the lead to 39-35. Another Cardoso layup. South Carolina goes up 41-35. Von Oelhoffen scores for OSU. Paopao’s three is off and the Beavers get it back. Von Oelhoffen’s jumper is good, cutting the Gamecocks’ lead to 41-39. And a South Carolina turnover. OSU gives it right back, though.

-- The biggest storyline for Oregon State to start the second half is the Beavers’ foul trouble. Timea Gardiner and Raegan Beers each have three fouls. Both are on the floor to start the third quarter.

HALFTIME: South Carolina 37, Oregon State 33

Hunter with a 3. Beavers staying in it from the perimeter. 37-33.

Now Beers is hit with her third. Beavers in serious trouble inside. South Carolina 37-30, :56 2Q

Hunter 3 ends a 4-0 streak by SC. Gamecocks 35-30

Two free throws for the Gamecocks’ Hall. 33-27

Beers get an offensive rebound and is fouled. 3:10 2Q South Carolina 31-27

No choice but to bring Beers back in the game. She scores to cut the deficit to 7. Now a 4-0 run by OSU on a steal and layup by Paurova.

The Pac-12 is strong, but it doesn’t have a team with this much interior talent. Gamecocks have a 22-2 edge on points in the paint.

With Gardiner on the bench, Oregon State turns to Kelsey Rees, who has a heck of a time guarding Cardoso. Gamecocks on a 6-0 run. SC 31-22

MVP Arena is mostly full, and will decidedly favor South Carolina fans, who travel and don’t need to go nearly as far as Oregon Staters. Starting lineups being introduced.
