Michael Penix Jr. may have quieted the doubters.

The quarterback produced a strong performance Thursday at the University of Washington’s Pro Day, showing off a cannon-like arm along with surprising speed and athleticism.

Penix, runner-up in the Heisman Trophy voting last season, used the day to show NFL decision-makers that he’s far more than just a pocket passer.

“I just wanted to show that I’m athletic and I can do it with my legs if I have to,” Penix told reporters after the workout.

After opting not to run the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine, Penix posted a surprising time of between 4.56 to 4.59 seconds on Thursday. The expectation was for Penix’s time to be a couple of seconds slower.

The time may have quelled some concerns about his overall speed after he ran just eight times during the 2023 season. He ran a total of 127 times during the past five seasons when he was at Washington and Indiana.

Penix, who threw for 4,903 yards, 36 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while leading the Huskies to the national championship game last season, posted a 36.5-inch vertical jump and a broad jump of 10 feet, 5 inches – numbers that would have topped all quarterbacks at the combine.

Performing in front of scouts, coaches and executives representing 30 teams, Penix was impressive with his passing. Most of Penix’s throws – including a 75-yard strike – were on the money. He was irked after missing a few intermediate and short throws, but overall he was pleased with his day.

“I don’t like missing throws,” Penix said. “I missed like three throws, but I felt good, though. I felt good. Missing three throws out of 60, I can’t complain.”

Penix is projected to be a second-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft in April. But after his pro day, he could be a first-round pick with solid performances in private workouts during upcoming workouts with teams.

Penix said he has upcoming visits scheduled with the Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders, Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Giants.

“I’m just ready to see where I’m going so I can help a team win football games,” Penix told reporters. “It’s a blessing. I’m enjoying each and every step.”
