Intel named Justin Hotard head of its data center group Wednesday, hiring him away from an executive role at Hewlett Packard Enterprise.

Hotard succeeds Sandra Rivera, who is stepping away from Intel’s data center group to lead the company’s new standalone programmable chip business.

Data centers are among Intel’s largest and most profitable businesses, accounting for $11 billion in profits during the first nine months of the year. But Intel has been shedding market share to rivals like AMD and Nvidia. That competition, in conjunction with a slowdown in business spending, resulted in a nearly 25% drop in Intel’s data center revenue this year.

The chipmaker is hopeful new classes of Intel semiconductors will help make the company more competitive, especially in the emerging market for artificial intelligence in the data center.

“Justin is committed to our vision to create world-changing technologies and passionate about the critical role Intel will play in empowering our customers for decades to come,” Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said in a written statement.

Previously, Hotard was vice president of high-performance computing and artificial intelligence at Hewlett Packard and head of Hewlett Packard Labs. He joins Intel on Feb. 1.
