As Nike layoffs begin, alumni group prepares to help workers land on their feet
Nike is the largest company in Oregon history and a global leader in sportswear. It’s the only Oregon company in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, an index of 30 leading stocks. Nike employs 11,400 in Oregon, mostly at a 400-acre headquarters campus near Beaverton, according to its most recent annual report. The company employs 83,700 worldwide. More than 1.1 million people work in Nike’s 502 contract factories, mostly in Vietnam, Indonesia and China, according to the company’s online manufacturing map. Phil Knight cofounded the company, then known as Blue Ribbon Sports, with Bill Bowerman, his former University of Oregon track coach, in 1964. The company later changed its name to Nike.
