Update: Nathaniel Shauntae McCrae Jr., 16, turned himself in to Salem police Friday night

A 16-year-old died and two other teens were injured in a shooting Thursday in Salem, the city’s police department said.

Two “large groups” of teenagers were in Bush’s Pasture Park at about 1:45 p.m. when gunfire erupted, killing Jose Vasquez-Valenzuela. Officers soon arrived and aided the injured, according to police.

Fifteen-year-old Daniel Esquivel-Soto and a 16-year-old whose name hasn’t been released are recovering in area hospitals. Officials have not provided information on the extent of their injuries.

Police said they haven’t released the name of the 16-year-old victim who survived because they are still trying to reach his family.

Salem police’s Violent Crimes Unit is investigating the shooting. No arrests have been made.

Salem police Chief Trevor Womack said in a statement that his department is “focused solely upon solving this crime, holding the perpetrators accountable, and bringing justice to these victims and their families.”
